What is the purpose of a D Ring snaffle bit?

According to master bit maker, Greg Darnall, the function of the D-Ring snaffle bit is primarily to provide clear, direct communication between the rider and the horse.

The D Ring snaffle is named for the D-shaped rings attached to the bit, which helps to prevent the bit from pulling through the horse's mouth, offering a more secure fit. This design also provides a lateral guiding effect. The main purpose of the D Ring snaffle bit it to apply gentle pressure on the horse's cheeks when pulled laterally. The snaffle part of the bit means it functions without leverage, using direct pressure instead of a pivoting action, making it a milder choice suitable for training and general riding. The solid mouthpiece with low port and medium port functions as an increased aid in lateral movement. These mouthpieces are ideal for horses that tend to be over bent in the turns and need increased aid controlling lateral movement of shoulders.

This bit is favored for its effectiveness in teaching young horses to yield to bit pressure, or more advanced horses that need extra lateral movement. It's a popular choice among both novice and experienced riders for its simplicity and effectiveness in various equestrian disciplines.

Our D-Ring bits are designed by Greg Darnall, exclusively for WD Bits. All bits have stainless steel cheeks that will not rust and sweet iron mouthpieces with copper inlay. We have 9 mouthpieces available, they are smooth snaffle in 1/2" and 3/8" diameter, square twist, twisted wire, billy-allen, solid mouthpiece with low port in 1/2" and 3/8" diameter, and solid mouthpiece with medium port in 1/2" and 3/8" diameter.
